Default Paint question

Well i am not to familiar with painting a car and the whole process but i hope somebody can fill me in on a little detail. I ask the body shop if they can paint a new color. They said it will cost more to me it make no sense cuz the whole car is sanded already. His excuse was it has lots of bondo and it wont look nice. So i asked okay can u put like coloured flakes or sparkles and he said its a whole new set up and u can't just mix it like that. Wondering how true are these statements.

If the bondo isn't sanded down perfectly smooth with no imperfections, then ANY color will look like crap. It's not like housepaint that is thick, auto paint is typically a very, very, VERY thin coat that is overlaid with a clearcoat. I've never tried to mix sparkles in, but most auto parts stores carry a clearcoat spray (in a can) that can quickly and easily be applied after the fact, but I wouldn't want to try to do a whole car in it. Not saying it's impossible, but it'd be a pain in the butt and you'd be buying a LOT of cans.

no no no nono, no clearcoat can sprays... the bondo thing its true, and the process that ducky described its absolutely correct, but the flakes and glitters and pearlescents are effects that are added on the top clear coats, and another one on the very end. It's an interesting process but i dont think they should charge you that much since MOST of the sanding is done (i said most, meaning not all of it) already. what i always do is compare various places before i pick one

Thanks Kaede, I'll admit openly that I've never bothered with too much of the flash paint effects. Even clearcoats here go to hell in about a minute and a half due to sun damage, so if you can find a shop that'll do multiple layers of an enamel high gloss paint, that's often the best bet for around here. YMMV, but I've had great results with that.

Then again, there's not much that I do that's normal. LOL

okay kewl.. soo its not all lost yet.. i saw the paint job so far and its back to the original black paint that it came with. Its a really deep glossy looking black. Not that bad actually. So at the end process i can ask him to put some paint affects afterwards at the end of the clear coat.

if you know what your doing, you can add anything to any paint or clearcoat, i do it all the time.
the guys at the body shop must not know much, but any kind of flake or pearl isnt cheap at all.

I see, well i called the shop to find out the process in which it was painted. What they did was put 4 coats of urethane paint. Is that the kind of paint that was used when the car was built. Since they used urethane paint he said no clear coat is required and that why he can't put paint affects.
