Default Question about porting exhaust manifold.

Ok so I had a question about porting the exhaust manifold. I saw this article
http://www.vfaq.com/mods/porting-exhman.html
I was confused, are you supposed to buy a 1G exhaust manifold gasket and port it to match it? Also do you port the collection end to match an Evo III?

The idea of port matching is to reduce the amount of turbulance created when you have 2 uneven surfaces. Most of the time your cylinder head ports are smaller compared to your intake/exhaust manifold. To get both of them close as possible to each other, you will need to use the gasket as your guide so that both surfaces and the gasket are all inlined with each other. With that being said, if you have an evo3 exhaust manifold, you would use your exhaust gasket as an outline to port your exhuast cylinder ports and your exhaust manifold port/runner. As for the port where you turbo meets up with your exhaust manifold, you would use the evo3 gasket there too so that both ports and the gasket are inlined with each other.

As for a 1g exhaust manifold gasket, I believe the exhaust side of the 1g head is similar to the 2g head, but I'm not 100% sure without going to the garage to measure them. However, since the 2g/evo 3 manifold is an upgrade for the 1g they have to be somewhat identical. I know the 1g intake side is much larger compared to the 2g.

When porting your head, take your time and don't go too crazy because you have water jackets running under the ports. If your not comfortable, you can either buy a cheap head on ebay and practice or have someone that knows what they are doing do it for you.
