RE: rearview mirrors
You can always sand them down and repaint them? I've had the same issue here and there too but I've been using polish to remove the bug stains after each wash...but I've been doing for some time now so I don't have a build up of them either.

Yea.
They're dried up lovebugs, nothing can get them off.
For those who live outside southeast region, we here have whats called Lovebugs, a wonderful hybrid bug created by the brilliant minds at LSU.
Lovebugs are an attempt to neutralize the mosquito population. They have an acidic orange bulb on their stomach. When a mosquito is found, the lovebug pulls a taliban and suicide bombs the mosquito.
Unfortunately, the lovebug has no predators b/c of its acid bulb, so all they do is fly around and reproduce. The acid in them destroys paint on front bumpers and hoods.
When they impale your car, you have about a 24hr window to wash the off with suds and water
