For the 1g's it was nessciarry, but in 95 when mitsubishi took over the eclipse sales they compleatly re worked the looks of the car. Because it looked so different mitsubishi kept the hood bump for uniquness an to let everyone know that although the car looks compleatly different, it still comes from the same roots. So it was only serves a purpous for the 1g's the 2g's are just for looks.

you gotta admit though it does look cool. I think it was a good idea for them to keep it. I know that the timing belt is is in the same place as the bump though so is it that they just modified the engine bay to make it fit with or without the bump?

Do you know what they did then to not need it. Then must have just modified the engine bay i guess. Cuz everything is the same as far as the engine and the head. Or i guess it could also be the body cuz the hood isnt flat and like the 1g.

Yeah the bump was only needed on the 1g's. It was carried over to the 2gs for the style and to keep it some what simular. The 2g 4g will fit fine without the bump. Ive seen a few 2g 4g63 with other hoods in it without the bump.
