<IMG src=smileys/smiley7.gif border="0">okay,if this is a 4g63 engine i'll try and help you.when you put on your new belt i hope you didn't turn cams or crankshaft. Before removing old belt you should have had crankshaft at top dead center mark with timing marks on cams in line with each other (even with height of head)horizontally, and also with cam sprocket dowel pins facing directly upward. If dowel pins are facing downward you must rotate crankshaft one more turn, now cam sprocket dowel pins will be facing up.Note at this time the timing marks on balance shaft sprockets should be lined up also, one is run off the timing belt, and one is run off of smaller "B"timing belt. Now you can remove two bolts that mount automatic belt tensioner and remove timing belt.Never turn crank or cams with belt removed as you may bend valves or dent pistons !!! When you install new belt, first insure intake cam sprocket timing mark is horizontal (dowel pin up) and lay belt onto sprocket. Then using a wrench on exhaust cam sprocket, hold it into position and engage belt on it keeping timing marks in line (exhaust cam will try to turn slightly because of valve springs).Use those black spring clips they use to hold notebook papers together to hold belt in position on each sprocket. Now you can thread belt carefully around remaining pulleys and reinstall auto. belt tensioner. My guess is you are one tooth off somewhere, probably cam timing. If you need more help i have complete factory service manual.</P>

Get this, the Mitsu dealership I no longer go to didnt line up the balance shaft when they installed my new valves and timing belt. Im glad I didnt have a case of something carbonated in the car or it would have exploded from the shaking. APPLAUSE to oldmansgs you probably know more that the dealership I talked about keep up the good posts<FONT color=blue>. <FONT size=3>LISTEN TO OLD MAN</FONT></FONT>.</P><edited><editID>XLR8N_GSX</editID><editDate>37974.2215625</editDate></edited>

<IMG src=smileys/smiley17.gif border="0">Hi XLR8N_GSX,</P>

Thanx for the kind words. The balance shaft timing is very critical for a smooth running engine and there is a small trick involved with doing it as you can actually have it one turn out of time, believe it or not,and also this drives the oil pump. There is a threaded plug on the side of the block(firewall side) where you insert a phillips head screwdriver thru and see how far it goes in this hole with the balance shaft timing marks aligned. If it only goes in about an inch then you have to rotate shaft exactly one turn and try putting screwdriver in hole again, now it should go in much further.Balance shaft is now properly timed. As i stated before there are two timing shafts and the other one should match up with its timing marks at this time.Hope this helps anyone else replacing timing belt, good luck, write me if you need help.</P>

<IMG src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0">Hi alvar,</P>

The 1.8 liter engine is similar to the 2.0 liter in that they both use two balance shafts, also known as silent shafts. The 1.8 is actually easier to work on as it only has one overhead camshaft as opposed to two cams on the 2.0 .When you put the new timing belt on you should have all the timing marks lined up before actually put the belt on.The crankshaft must be at top dead center on the number one cylinder(crankshaft pulley lined up with zero degree or t.d.c. mark on timing cover),camshaft timing marks lined up pointing at each other, and first silent shaft timing marks lined up.If the timing marks on the first silent shaft (this shaft is driven by the smaller "B" timing belt) are not lined up when crankshaft is in proper position then you must turn the crankshaft until these timing marks do line up when crankshaft is returned to cylinder #1 top dead center, usually a few revolutions will line this up.Now the crankshaft should be in the right position, the camshaft should be lined up correctly, and left side silent shaft should be in time. Now, you must set the right side silent shaft (this shaft is driven off the regular larger timing belt ) timing marks. You MUST remove the threaded plug from the side of the block( on firewall side of block) to see if this shaft is in time even if the timing marks are lined up as you can be one full revolution out of time.A regular sized phillips screwdriver is inserted into the hole once the plug is removed. With timing marks lined up,if you can only get the screwdriver in less than an inch you are one turn out of time on this shaft.Turn shaft pulley one turn and try inserting screwdriver again,it should go in much further. If it does, leave it in hole until you carefully install timing belt ,then remove it once belt is installed. Don"t forget to reinstall plug in hole. This plug is about 6" up from edge of block where oil pan bolts up,approx. in line with #3 cylinder on firewall side. Now you should turn crankshaft so cam moves 2 teeth and and set belt tension at this position as this puts proper load on belt.Allways turn crankshaft in a clockwise rotation, never counterclockwise.I hope this helps,if you want actual copies of factory service manual instructions on how to change timing belts (complete with lots of pictures) then e-mail me with a fax number i can send them to or to make other arrangements.
