Ok, my Eclipse officially has its first problem.
When I shift into reverse, the trans itself is making some kind of mechanical whirring sound for about 5-10seconds. It also does this when shifted into 1st gear.
It has never made this noise up until today.
Its not a grinding noise, like the clutch would make. Its def. inside the tranny.
Sang? Sebba? Emonz? Silvercoupe? TheEngineer? Any thoughts??? (you seem to be some of the most knowledgeable).
I know NOTHING about Trannys.

Manual or auto?... my guess is that your talking about auto.. and in that case i have no clue. I know nada about auti trannies

Is the car moving while making the whirring sound? Or is it just spinning for 5-10 seconds THEN starts moving? Dunno if I'm explaining my question right...

Does it do this on a cold motor or warm motor? Also, I think you have the grinding noise thing backwards, the gears inside the transmission will grind while the clutch won't make much noise at all...*unless it's the throw out bearing but that will do more than whir if it was bad and it can do it when you're not on the clutch. The throw out bearing, on the clutch side, can make that whirring noise (if it's the same noise I'm thinking about, lol). *The throw out bearing can also make metal to metal noises (or the likes) when you're not on the clutch. I guess the clutch can too, but that would be because a spring somehow came off....*(info started to run together here, lol) For the tranny to start making a whirring noise like you described, well, that could be anything in there.
Let me ask you this, where does the clutch engage and disengage, put your car in gear and picture in your head a half of a pie, imagine it marked in four even pieces....now, where does the clutch catch and where does the clutch release, according to that imaginary pie chart? This question is clutch wear related.
Have you checked your tranny fluid lately? Has it ever been looked at or changed?

wow you guys are really piling on the questions for him :D. But they are right. Alittle more detail is needed. Like does it only do it when the clutch is depressed.

The noise occurs when the engine is warmed up.
And its only at idle when you depress the clutch and shift into gear.
Its a little whirring/hum noise that then makes a click when it stops.
The clutch is new, and the Trans was serviced when i did the clutch.

I have an appointment with the Mitsu dealer tuesday and they'll figure it out.
And its under warranty. I was asking because curiosity always gets to you.
To me, it sounds almost like the gears rubbing each other, like too much friction.
Again, I know as much about Trans' as does Lance Bass about heterosexual activities ;)

YES!
Its horrible in reverse for about 10 seconds.
