my eclipse is an auto unfortunatley. but when it shifts from 3rd to 4th it seems to rev up kinda high and hesitates b4 it shifts to 4th. is that a sign of a bad tranny? cuz the owner b4 me just replaced the tranny.

 

I would start with checking the fluid level. I know in my dodge ram it was shifting weird and my family mechanic looked at it and said there was too much trans fluid in it causing the pressure to get to high which made it do some weird shifting. Otherwise, whoever put the new tranny in might have put something in wrong.

 

The transmission is slipping. It either requires replacing, or rebuilding.

 

This is not always true. I have a family member that is a mechanic. He is fully ASE certified and specializes in transmissions. I had a similar issue with my Dodge Ram and thought he would have to rebuild it....he checked the fluid level, said it was way over full, drained it, refilled it to the right amount and it has never slipped again. He even later went into my transmission to replace my overdrive control module and said the inside looks like a brand new transmission. I would check the fluid levels before I start thinking it is the tranny going out. My mechanic told me that 98% of shops will tell you the tranny is going out and needs rebuilt or replaced....then charge you $2500 to clean the outside up, change and properly fill the fluid and have spent practically nothing screwing you over. He said his boss tried to do that where he used to work but he refused to cheat people like that and opened his own shop a block down
