Default Won’t Idle

I have 95 Eclipse GS-T. Runs GREAT, BUT, it won't idle. The check engine light comes on for a few days and then goes off, more off than on. At times I can smell fuel. Right now the check engine light is OFF, but it won't idle. When it dies, it starts right back up. Just can't keep it running when I have to slow down , turn or just idle. As long as I am driving down the road it runs fine. Any suggestions???

Also, can someone tell me how to check for codes???

I know when I added my air intake and hacked the lower honeycombs from the MAF, I had the same problem. I had too much air flow coming in the the ECU was trying to correct it. I also know that a dirty throttle bottle will cause the same symptoms.

Hi DalbyBabe, If the car runs great otherwise, I would look into your I.S.C. motor assembly (idle speed control motor). It sounds like the isc is not responding to computer commands. The isc controls the amount of air allowed into intake for proper idle speed control and adjusts air amount as necessary for different conditions such as air conditioning running or not, etc. I would also check the idle position switch if your car has one.I know first generation cars have a switch to tell the ecu that the throttle is closed but i don't know about 95's. This would probably be a one wire switch that reads the throttle shaft position and is just a simple on/off plunger type switch that can be easily checked with an ohm meter to see if it changes conditions as the throttle is opened and closed. I would look at this first as your ecu might not know you should be in an idle mode. Then also check to make sure your isc electrical plug didn't fall off or loosen up. You can check your own engine codes using your own "check engine light" by cycling the ignition key on and off several times quickly and then reading the flashing codes. You can find the entire process instructions by going to www.troublecodes.net and using pulldown menu on trouble codes, click on mitsubishi and follow instructions, it's easy. Good luck, hope this helps, Randy

Good advise but i would also check the injectors if you smell fuel it or theycould be leaking or maybe the plugs are not firing correct and the fuel is lingering in the head a little too long Idle air control may be faulty also but to do a few tests first may help you .

engine codes

KV test on all four cylinders

and a simple compression test will help tell you what shape the cylinders are in

fuel presure test , fuel regulator may be faulty

you can email me @

RickMiraski@aol.com if you need anymore help on this

just for the heck of it pull those plugs out and make sure you have NGK's in there or mitsubishi plugs also NGK
