96 eclipse starts sometimes but cuts off after awhile whats the problem

alternator....

Can you give more info. More detail. What exactly happens? Did it just all of a sudden just stop staying on? Has this happened before? Did it just happen once?

if it was the alternator it wouldn't even stay alive if the thing was near death, could be something with choke, if one is set, but that would probably make it worse, but the thing i could think of that would make it do such a thing like that is that there could be something wrong with the internal timing or the fuel rail. my dad's advenger ran for awhile until he came to a stop and it dies, and we found out that it was dumping too much fuel into the engine and running right out the exhaust.

If you want an even somewhat correct answer, youre going to have to describe it better. How quickly does it die? Does it fight it for a while? Can you drive it before it dies at all? does your starter ever grind when youre trying to start? MORE DETAILS!!!
