Vibration after timing belt replacement
 

I've read through previous posts regarding timing belt issues, the situation I'm in is a little different, though. I had the timing belts replaced (at 89,000 miles) by a mechanic who's fixed a number of things in my car. After going through the previous posts, I realize I should've had it done at the dealer.

After my mechanic replaced the belts (which took him longer than he was supposed to), there would be intense vibration while idling (after starting the engine in the morning). The vibration would get worse if I revved at 1400-1600 RPM, but would subside beyond that. The vibration would completely disappear when I put the gear in drive, and would reappear when i put it in park. I haven't used the car since I got it back, and I'm taking it back to the mechanic tomorrow so he could figure out what happened. I've felt a bit of vibration prior to the timing belt replacement and I thought this would get rid of it, but somehow it got worse.

Need help, would like to know what went wrong, and what should be done.

He might have set the timing off?

The car ran quite well on my way home from the shop (about a 10-min drive), didn't feel any hesitation. Not sure that the timing was off. I'm thinking it may be related to the vibration that I had been feeling right up to the replacement of the timing belt (engine mounts, perhaps?). You think the replacement worsened it?

there should be rubber anti-vibration pads on either side of the engine mount on the passenger side of the engine. or it could be an unbalanced pulley or something....tough call...keep me posted.

when your mechanic replaced your timing belt he didnt corectly rotate the oil pump gear. there is a balancer shaft that the oil pump gear is bolted to. that balancer shaft is 180 degree's out of sync. that belt has gotta come back off and the shaft be properly set. thats a common issue with aftermarket shops working on mitsubishi products. they just dont know about it. very costly mistake on there part. greg....

Thanks for all the replies. My mechanic told me that the engine mounts needed replacement. I wasn't quite sure he knew what he was doing, as he had the car for 3 days before telling me that it was definitely the mounts. I went to get a second opinion from another shop, and had the engine mounts replaced (at the second shop) for a lot less money. Now all the vibration is gone, and the car drives like new.
