1997 Montero LS shifting problem! HELP

New here, i just bought a 1997 Montero LS. It is automatic 4 WD. When you put it in drive and accelerate it feels like its in 2nd gear. If you shift manually it does fine. I was reading about the HOLD button next to the shifter and how if its engaged it makes it take off in second for icey / snowy roads. I can not find anything else about this online any help would be appreciated. also overdrive does not engage, the light dosent even come on.

I pulled the pan and changed the fluid and filter. The fluid was clean and the pan had no clutch material. This did not help. Still, thanks for the reply. Im curious if there are any external senors or solenoids that might control the shifting. I have look everywhere online for info but no luck.
