92 Galant random no start - any ideas ?

Hi all,
I have a problem which has stumped the Mitsi garage. The car is a 92 Galant 1.8 DOHC automatic, import, fully loaded and in immaculate condition, 4G67 engine E35A chassis. NEVER had ANY previous problems, but reading about the ECU (MD166267) capacitors these were changed a few weeks ago.

Normally when starting the ignition, engine temp and check engine light come on. When running or idling it is perfect, smooth, sweet, just like new.

Randomly, sometimes when hot sometimes when cold I go to start it and only the ignition light comes on and it wont start. I can sit there for anything from 2 minutes to 2 days turning the ignition on/off and eventually the other two lights come on and it starts. Nothing has been touched or tried during the "one light only" situation.
Recently I noticed that if I left the ignition on for a while the check engine light started faint flickering, the flicker got stronger and after about 20-30 seconds of this it suddenly came on solid, the engine temp came on and away we went. Sometimes it goes for days with no problems, then it will do the "one light thing" 3 or 4 times a day.

There is no diagnostic port, and incidentally I have never seen the oil pressure light on.
So, guys, any ideas gratefully received

electrical problem. Bad ground on sensors, bad contact at fuse panel or ignition barrel.
