95 Mits Eclipse Loud Pop/stopped running
I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT. While driving down the road there was a loud bang/pop then the motor died. I coasted into a parking lot and tried to start the car. The starter just spins freely and doesn't engage the flywheel. Would a hosed starter cause the engine to quit running? I tried to push start the car and guess I wasn't strong enough. Is there a way to bypass the starter to get the car running? Could there be other issues??

Is the car turbo or non turbo?
Is it a manual trans or auto? |
RE: 95 Mits Eclipse Loud Pop/stopped running
It's a Turbo and a 5 speed.

How many miles are on it? Have you ever changed the timing belt?

RE: 95 Mits Eclipse Loud Pop/stopped running
I had a complete rebuild port/polish all inards including timing belt, seals, gaskets, crank/cam sensors..etc. I suppose it could still be the timing belt though. Not sure I want to try and push start it if something is broken inside... could cause more damage. Guess I'll have to call the mechanic and get it towed/fixed. I was hoping there would be some simple ways to test what could be wrong besides the started being smoked.
Thanks, John |

Pull off the timing cover and check that out. Sounds too typical.
