checking codes

Hi, im Chad. Im not too familiar with the 2g eclipse but i have one that is throwing a code. With my srt-4 you just cycle the ignition on and off 3 times and it will throw the code on the digital odo. The 97' eclipse has an old school rolling odo (analog?) so that is obviously not an option. I was just curious if there is any way to check what the code is and if anyone has a link to a list of code definitions. My guess is that you need to run a diagnostic through the ecu but im poor and dont want to take the car to a shop if i can help it. The car seems to be running fine but im sure that the problem is something to worry about since the check engine light is on. Thanks for your help!

I don't remember the diag trick but if you take it to Autozone or Advanced they'll usually pull codes for you for free.

I wish we had Autozone's in WA. I called a few local shops and they quoted $45, $75, and "anywhere from $45 to $130 and that also includes a half hour labor chasing the code!" What a joke. When I asked how to pull a code, one service tech said that there is a usb port somewhere by the steering column that you just plug into to get your code. Doesnt sound like 30 min of work to me. Ah well, looks like ill just go to the lowest bidder and come back to you guys if I need help troubleshooting. Thanks again for your help.

You don't have Advanced, Pep Boys, or Auto Zone?? WOW... Well there IS a port under the steering column but it's not USB. It SHOULD be an ODBII port. It takes about 5-10 minutes to pull codes (Depending on machine used the snapon scanner II and the MAC Mentor both take time cuz they are SLOW machines LOL). The shop I worked at charged $80 to pull codes as a diagnostic fee. If you get the problem fixed at our shop the diag fee was waived.
