help with engine knocking
im new in here so first of all i wanna say whats up guys/girls. Well i have a pretty big problem. About 2 months ago i was drigin my 95 talon esi which has a 420a 2.0 engine in it. I was in the highway when all of the sudden it starts knocking. I was going about 65-70 i would say. I pulled over and checked the oil. It was full. So i came home right away (driving slow of course). I let it cool down and rechecked the oil and its fine. I had it towed to a shop and all he said is that I needed a new motor. Since I didnt have the money for that I had it towed back home. He said it would be 1700$. Another guy came to take a quick look at it but didnt open anything in the motor. He said that by the sound of it, it sounds that its either the timing thats bad or that the oil pump went bad so it has no oil circulating so its knocking. To me it made a lil sense. So he told his mechanic what he heard and thought it would be and the mechanic said some bad news. That the engine is made of aluminum so if its knocking then more than likely i "will" need a new engine or have it rebuilt. I wanted to know if theres anyone out there that has had this happened to or has any idea of what I should do. I took it once more around the block, and it struggles to speed up. Whatcha think?

RE: help with engine knocking
you mean take a look at the lifters or the oil pump? I also wanted to know if this car is an OBD 1 or an OBD 2? I wanted to buy a scanner maybe that would give me an idea of what could be wrong, right?

Well whatever you do dont drive this thing anywhere. I would pull off the timing belt cover and check that out. See if the teeth are destroyed. if it looks like the belt slipped then the $1700 estimate is pretty correct. But if this went you probably dont need a new "motor" you need to have the cylinder head rebuilt because you will have bent valves. Your car has the OBD II reader on it.

Cool, i took the cover off and all the teeth seem to be fine. Do they change the oil pump when they rebuild the engine? Does anyone know what they change when they rebuild the whole engine? Lets say there's only one bad rod, do they change all of them or just that one rod? If they change all the rods, pistons, the crank so on and so forth, then I "do" concider having the engine rebuilt. I'll take advantage of the opportunity and do some performance additions and motifications to the motor. Another question, if i have the motor port and polished, head and block, would I need to upgrade all the internal parts or do the original ones perform as good as they say. I've heard they can handle up to 400 hp.

RE: help with engine knocking
you can port and polish the head on the stock internals. The stock internals on the 420a are definetly worth building up though. Because if and when you get a turbo kit that will allow you to run a higher boost and alot more power. I doubt that the stock internals in that can handle 400hp. The man on here to pm about the 420a's is "Slow420a".
But back to what happened. What exactly are they saying happened to your car. That you broke a rod or something. Because if that happened then youd really know right away. Im still finding it hard to believe that you need a new engine.
