How can I get a smoother ride?

I have a '97 Montero Sport. The ride is extremely bumpy - you can feel everything. Do I need
new shocks/struts? I have checked the tire pressure and they are at the setting. Any info
would be extremely helpful.

Thanks
Dianne

do you have mud terrain of off road tires? have you had your suspension replaced before, perhaps with heavy duty suspension? when shocks/struts go bad, they will leak the fluid inside of them. as it runs down the shock/strut, it leaves a residue, and dirt sticks to that, and it will appear as though the unit has mud caked to it. however, if you offroad, you may very likely have mud caked to them already.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. I don't offroad. As far as I know, the suspension hasn't been
replaced. I bought my '97 used in 2000. Anything else that would cause a bumpy ride?

well, any SUV will have a rougher ride than, say, a passenger car. what exactly is the tire pressure set at? where abouts do you live? i would recommend having the suspension checked out...some shops, such as monro or midas will ususally check for free.

Another thing effects the ride of the car or suv are rims with low profile tires. with less tire to absorbe the lil bumps in the road the rim will take the bump and then you will feel the bump.
