Default New Member... looking for advice

Ive been searching the internet for the answer to my question, and tho it would seem to be a common issue, I can't find a clear answer anywhere.

My daughter has a 2007 Eclipse GS 2.4L and the timing belts teeth stripped off at the crankshaft pulley so it lost timing.

My question is when i install the new belt, and i set piston 1 at TDC, how do I know Im at TDC of the compression stroke vs TDC of the exhaust stroke? If it was a wasted spark ignition it wouldnt matter, but it's a coil on plug sequential fire ignition (Im told).

I hope this makes sense, I keep getting the feeling Im missing something really easy and obvious, otherwise Id be finding other people asking the same question. Every how-to I find, including "broken timing belt repairs" all talk about setting the timing to the marks as if the old belt is still there.

It doesnt matter. As long as the timing marks are all aligned correctly when you put the belt on you are ok

Thank you for the reply. So i don't have to figure out which revolution the crank is on to time the spark to cyl 1, even with it being sequential fire?

Yep that is correct. The camshaft sensors in conjunction with the crankshaft sensor sorts that out

fantastic, thx. I hope this thread helps the next guy wondering the same question.

PS- hey next guy- you do have to make sure the oil pump sprocket is on the correct revolution- 14mm bolt under the manifold procedure, it's on YT.

The next guy will probably be me again in 3 years.

I have another question...

I lined everything up, installed belt, made the mistake of installing hydrolic tensioner before doing 2 full revolutions to get rid of slack. Now everything lines up except my oil pump sprocket, its mark moved from 11 oclock where it started, to about 7 o'clock.

Do i need to start over or will i be ok?

EDIT Nvrmnd, i did a couple more pairs of rotations and everything's ok.
