Shifter linkage problems.

Driving my car about a week ago, All of a sudden I lost all shifting capabilities in my car. A 1997 Eclipse non turbo GS.
Threw the hazards on and pulled over. let the clutch out and it killed the car. Started it back up, Tried to take off and it was stuck in 3rd gear.

Got it towed home, ripped the center console out of it, and i noticed that the cable going to the shifter is all messed up, not the outer one, the inner one that is attached to the bottom of the shifter itself. The rubber piece is pushed all the way back, the plastic is broken on the housing for the cable and it just keeps kinking on me when I try to change gears. any ideas of where I should start to fix this? Do I need to replace the whole cable or just the boot parts and the plastic? Need some quick help here. Car is my daily.

Thanks.

It sounds like it's slightly different than my 03' but this is where I would start. I would go to a junk yard, or two until you find one that has a car like yours. Take some tools with you and take apart one in a scrapped car to get your parts. At that time you can decide if you need to replace the cable as well depending on how that one comes apart. then if you need the cable you can snag it while your there. I've done this many times. It gives you a chance to rip apart a car thats not yours and figure out exactly how it comes apart and goes back together without destroying your car. And it saves you money on the parts. About 50%. I'm sure if someone else has more specifics on what you need they'll jump in here and say. Sorry I didn't have more information for you, but hope this helps some.
