Sputtering

Newbie here, and it looks like I should post my problem in this section. On a friend's '97 Eclipse 1.8, it sputters at low revs hot and cold, trouble starting cold. It does not handle WOT at all.

Plugs are fine, wires shock me real good when pulled off while idling and the miss is noticeable for each cylinder. I found only one vacuum leak.

EGR code 2 months back, but not since. I've searched this problem here and comments seem to center on fuel.

Is there an online diagnostics source, and is this motor used in an American car too? Just trying all angles.

Isn't it bad to pull the high tension leads off the spark plugs while the engine is still running. [sm=smiley22.gif]

bad on your engine... not so much... bad on your hands... very much.

Thats why they make plastic spark plug wire pullers. but you shouldn't pull spark plug wires on newer cars. On older cars, it was a very informative and well known practice. on new cars, without points and condensers, not letting the spark get back to ground to many times can damage the ignition.

. . . 4g63 turbo ?
As If :( . . . No, not turbo.

Thanks for the hint on not yanking newer wires. So, back to the problem. Is it leaning toward one type of problem over another? Fuel? Relays under the dash? I'm thinking dirty injectors, but no way to diagnose. How do you clean them?

Fuel injector cleaner... There are a ton of diffrent ones out there, but I opted for Valvoline's Super Concentrated Fuel Injector Cleaner
http://www.valvoline.com/pages/produ...asp?product=57
I payed around $6 for the bottle, and it claims to keep em clean for up to 3,000.
