All of the above.........Check the fluid, try to bleed the system, if that does not work, check the throw of the slave cylinder. If that looks good then either the clutch fork is bent or the pivot ball is warn. If you try all the others and they don't work let us know and I can give you a few other things to try.

Does it refuse to go into ANY gear forward and reverse with the engine running?? It sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging completely and that the transmission input shaft is still spinning with enough speed to make engagement extremely difficult. When he does start the car in gear and takes off, the the clutch grab right away right off of the floorboard?

RE: TRANNY ONLY GOES IN GEAR WHILE CAR IS OFF >??? WHY

somethin similar to that happened to me, it was next to impossible to shift into gear unless the car is off. i had to driv home from 93eclipsegsx's house in third gear the whole way, that was fun trying to start off from a stop... anyway, i ended up changin my slave and master cylinder, it ran me about $150, easy fix, it took me about two hours, (excluding the time it took to find a place that had the parts for my model), and that was the first actual mechanical work i'd ever done on a car, so if you got any experience, it shouldn't take you even close to that time. oh yeah, most importantly, find a friend and have him/her help you bleed the clutch release system
