Mitsubishi's Rust Policy

2 Attachment(s)
I bought a new 2011 Mitsubishi RVR (Outlander Sport) about 2.5 years ago from the dealer. A week or two ago, I noticed some rust bubbling on the rear driver-side quarter panel.

I took it to the dealership and they said it wasn't covered because it was a rock chip and Mitsubishi's rust warranty only covers rust perforation.

I would be fine with fixing on my own, but it's definitely not a rock chip. I also took it to two body shops where the rep doing the quote said it's not a rock chip.

I re-read the warranty and couldn't find anything specific, but I was wondering what other people's experiences were before going back to the dealership to get them to take another look at this.

Doesn't look like a rock chip but I am no expert. The warranty only covers perforation. Mitsubishi has the worst paint I have ever had the pleasure of having. If you have no success at the dealership try bumping it up to the regional rep.

I had a closer look and the seal at the lip of that piece of metal has deteriorated. That's probably how the moisture got in. I stuck my phone inside the wheel well, facing outwards to take some photos.

Took it back to the dealership, the service manager took some photos to send to Mitsubishi, and now I'm waiting to see if Mitsubishi will authorize some kind of action. I'm supposed to hear back in the next week or two.

Just a followup for anyone else who comes across this in the future.

After a ton of back and forth between the Dealer and me, Mitsibushi Canada authorized work at one of their preferred body shops. The body shop included paint blending in their quote but Mitsubishi Canada rejected those items and suggested I pay the ~$450 difference. I declined since I figured the car is relatively new.

Anyway, I booked the next appointment and will be taking my car in next week. It's supposed to take 4-5 days, so hopefully everything will be okay.

Not really impressed and annoyed because it's been nearly four months since I reported the damage and they wouldn't supply me with a loaner.

I have a 2001 and all I can tell you Is get used to the " Rock chip" cause your gona have to. Mine has them all over and underneath as well. If they could only get it right with the Paint rustproof they would last forever.

Yea it was a pretty painful process, but in fairness to Mitsubishi, it wasn't the paint degrading, but the rubber lining they use on the lip of the metal. I guess it degraded in some way to let moisture in and hold it there, causing the rust.

I was kind of annoyed that it was scheduled for a week at the body shop and they wouldn't cover a rental. On the plus side, they had it out in 3 days.
