Putting V8 Into 1992 3000GT

My 1992 Mits 3000GT has 185K miles on it. When it blows up I want to tear out the V6 and put in a Chevy 305-307 or a Dodge 318. I am not a Ford fan at all but am I thinking I could even use a mustang engine, tranny, axle, and rear end due to the size. I know I could make it fit, It would take some customizing. I would also need to strengthen up the frame. Has anyone ever done this? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I think some customizing is an understatement. Where are you pulling these front wheel drive V8's from? If you are considering a mustang drivetrain I would think you have quite a job ahead of you. You will need to change the engine to a front-rear layout and manage to fit that in the engine compartment. You will also need all the electronics to run the said motor. I'm afraid you would end up with a Frankenstein. It just sounds like way too many variables and too many angles to consider unless you are a very experienced builder. I would say that is quite an ambitious project. I would personally buy a new block and go turbo or do a complete performance rebuilt on your current motor-less headaches and money. To answer your question though, I have not heard of this being done, but I am pretty new here myself.

Ya I dont thing it will fit... the 6G72 V6 can barley fit in those cars. and to do a swap like that it is 1) not really worth the time and money and 2) youll make better power on a VR4 motor and be alot less of a cost.

If you swap your looking at tranny axels rear diff ECU adding 2 injectors wires ect ect I really really doubt anyone has done it yet;)

If you can make it happen... you are the man.

I dunno I think it'd be fairly easy if he found a 318 or a 307 from an OLD car. Like my Dodge Coronet. There's NOTHING under the hood but pure HP. I have a 318 WB (318 is likely out of the question though unlesss you find one that isn't a WB it's just too wide I think) and it has NO electronics... I agree though it'd take ALOT of custom work to the thing. I think it's more feasab;e than you guys think though. You're all thinking new age shyt. Go with the old school technology. Just make sure you don't live in an area that requires inspections LOL.

yes BUT the engine of the 3000gt is so jam packed into that engine bay I dont see how you plan on fitting 2 more cyls on each side, plus the tranny he mentiond would mean RWD conversion so the motor would need to be side ways from or the long way the engine bay is not long at all and or wide. I really dont think it can fit, but that is just me I guess

mike is right you would have to dut the firewall and make a tunnle for the tranny and the rear of the motor.

Man, good luck with That project. Like Emonz said, the engine bay is really small on those 3kgt. Plus if you want to make it rear wheel drive you're going to have to gut and rebuild the entire engine bay. It's not like just dropping in a new motor and hook up the hoses, you'll have to remount atleast 80% of the existing hardware that stays.
Why not just make it a VR4?? those are fast as all hell. twin turbo V6.

I don't want to sound like it'll never happen, i've seen Miata's with V8's. but again, thats going to take so much custom work you wont believe it. shyt, if you do pull this off definentally tell us so everyone in this post can put their foot in their mouth. lol

How great would that be though? Pull up to an inspection, pop open the hood, here's engine, WHAT The!? hahahaha

difference with the miatas is they are RWD so it isnt as hard to do. same as RX7s I have seen a few RX7s with some LS1s I think

understandable, i was just saying it's such a little car with a big engine swap. of course there's modifications but still, it's an accomplishment. another difference is there are actual kits for the miata swaps. called "MOnster Miatas" i believe
