flex pipe

i had my exhaust installed today and the guy said that i needed a new flex pipe. i dont know if he was just tryin to get more money from me or if it was true. he said it would be around 100 bucks to replace. is it common or smart to replace the flex pipe? what are common problems with it? 99 eclipse

RE: flex pipe

Have a look at your flexpipe. If you see soot anywhere around it or the braids are frayed, it is definitely time to change it. The purpose of the flexpipe is to separate the rear portion from the front, constantly moving with the motor, portion. With that said, do you see how the flexpipe may need to be changed? Price is fair and if you go to a turboback, catback, or go to a larger diameter piping, then yes you should change your flexpipe.

A flexpipe is welded on, so if you can weld and have a MIG or TIG welder, then you can. I hope in the flexpipe is like a hole in any other part of the exhaust tubing...yes it will affect noise if it leaks, otherwise, no. A flexpipe isn't like a resonator, catalytic converter, or muffler. It won't affect how the exhaust sounds. It's merely a flexible portion of the piping so that you exhaust doesn't move around as you rev or load your motor.

If your flex pipe is leaking its a good idea to check your engine mounts.

The flex pipes can go bad. Replace it. Exhaust leaking that close to the cockpit can be dangerous. plus it sounds bad
