Need Help Please.. Home made cold air intake

Hey guys... I got something i like to ask in regarding my home made cold air intake... Now i got a Mitsubishi 97 model 2 door... i wanted to get a little bit more power to it... so me and my mate took off the stock air filter which had a air flow regulator on it.. then we got some vacuum hose and put it on the air box and ran the hose down under just behind my lower front bar where there is mesh to help no bugs getting in and we got a stocking over it... im prob sure you guys have heard of this before.. but after doing this... the car is getting more power but my engine light is on. that is the problem.... now im pretty sure the engine light is on because the air regulator that controls how much air intake the engine gets is not plugged in and the car recognizes that.. any help on if this is bad for the car? cause im thinking that the car has a computer and i really dont wanna go driving it if im gonna do some serious damage to the engine... can i get some insides of whats going on and how to fix it? or if i should put my air filter back on and get it done professionally>? thanks guys any help would be appreciated....

ok so u just put back the stock air filter and plugged in to air regulator and the light went off... soo i guess now.. is it safe to have the regulator off and let the engine light stay on?

its not worth taking the air filter off. Just leave it

i say leave it, you dont want to start making home made products, they never really turn out right. if you cant get an intake on because of the MAF sensor and you dont want to spend the money for a AEM intake, then go on ebay and buy the MAF sensor boot, so you can mount more tubing or and intake filter on it, they are 9.99 and you can just make your own intake at the local auto parts store, its easy, cheap and you keep your sensors and your car safe and running good.
