Pre-Cats and Headers???

OK!!! I am irritated. I am looking into ordering some headers for my new Eclipse. First, I want to ask, why are those annoying pre-cats sucking down my power? Second, what headers should I buy? I have found a couple possibilities, but does any one have a reccomendation?

RE: Pre-Cats and Headers???

The entire OEM exhaust is not designed to make the most power from your engine. They are restrictive and can be improved upon. The precats and main cats create back pressure. May I suggest the Road Race Engineering website for you? Lots of parts there.

HERE'S ONE I think Road Race Motorsport don't sell parts for Eclipse.

first what gen is your eclipse and what model because with the third gen gt if you put a whole new exhaust on it, it will sound like **** i just put a magnaflo cat back on mine and it sounds great and boosted my performance just as much as putting new headers and pre cat would have. thats just my advice. and look on ebay and amazon because they have some really good products at pretty low prices.

First off, the stock exhaust system is designed for fuel economy and emissions. The catalytic converter is an emissions device and unfortunately like in some states (California) you cannot get rid of it.

As to why it sucks down your power, it's mostly because it provides backpressure on the engine limiting the amount of exhaust that can leave therefore limiting the amount of new combustibles that can be brought into the engine. The size of your entire exhaust system will affect this as well. That's why especially on a turbo car, you see people looking for 3" wide exhaust pipes from the engine back.
