The lower years break entirly too much, especially when you beat on them. I have put about 6 grand into mine and it just won't stop breaking, but it is finally under control. The higher years i have heard aren't as bad.

Itdoesnt necessarily depend on the year; mileage is the biggest problem; theres only two problems ive heard about 3kgt's/stealth's...and thats they dont tune well, (costs lots of money to make h.p); and they run into transmission problems. everything else is age and routine maintenence.

If your looking for a good year i would say around a 95. I just bought a 95 3000gt and the only thing that was wrong with it when i bought it was the overdrive was broke. So if your looking I would look around a 95 and up.

I'm getting a 1996. It's the last year for the 3000GT base and SL models to have 222 HP stock. In 1997 the base model goes down to 161 HP and the SL drops to 218. They did this to make it "more affordable", my guess due to it's popularity, as it has outsold the Nissan 300ZX and the Toyota Supra (reported by Mitsubishi itself, so who knows how slanted that information is).
Edit: However, if you have the money, the VR-4 pushes the same 320 HP through 1994-1999, and 300 before that. But unless you have the cash for a VR-4 (which you very well may, especially as the older models are less expensive), a 95-96 base/SL model is more than likely the way to go.
