hey guys im intrested in buying a 1993 3000 GT twin turbo VR4 5 speed with 144,000miles. i got teh guy down to about 3750.

i havnt seen teh car since its about 15 hours away, so i thought id ask some questions before i head out there.

the car seems to be in great condition (pitcures). seller said no mechanical problems with engine/tranny/turbos/interior etc. Olny problem is the passenger window has a dead motor. No accidents etc, hes teh second owner.

the car is a gift to my bro, as hes alwasy wanted one. SOO i want to make sure i dont buy a lemon which hes stuck with. my questions are...

1) what should i look for, sounds? driving habits? visual checks?

2) are the 3000 GT vr4's known to have any problems? for ffuture reference.

3) is it a good buy, if the car checks out clean?

i would like any help i can get. I dont know anything abotu these cars, or mitsubishi in general.

93 has the bearing issue the bottom ends seem to have some trouble sometimes and so do the 5spd trannys. I have heard of alot of spun bearing problems with them. If the car is strong for that price that is not bad but 15 hours away is kind of a big deal for a car that is not all that rare for the year


do you actually own an MKIV? supra I assume? or is that just a SN for the hell of it

 

im actually looking into trading for a 92 vr4 , the most help i have found was on 3si.org. check it out and do some searches. the 3kgt owners on there say they are hell to maintain. there was a major recall on the transfer case , make sure that has been done for sure. other than that its like all cars, they all have weakness'. you deal with it as it comes.

 

Ok, EMonz you are making too much of a deal about the bottom end. DSMs spin bearings alot more. The only problems i can think of with the 90-93 are the t-case that is known to leak if it has not been launched in sport mode. Aparently the weight transfer is alot higher in normal or touring. As far as the tranny goes... they are 'ok'. They are known to have reverse problems and 3rd and 4th problems.

When you view the car you should check the following: Rev it up on the spot and look for smoke from the exhaust. Check that the active air spiler adjust thing works, check under the oil cap for 'mayo' and sniff it for a smell of gas. Also check the oil to see if its golden brown or black. Remember to hit every single gear on the test drive including reverse and remember to ask about the timing belt change!.

well the carrier bearings go out real often...that might be it.... they are like 70 bucks a pop.....x how ever many you would need.

if its a wheel bearing , its an expensive one for 150.00........?

 

as sebba said about the timing belt, also make sure that the complete 120000 service was done. i know the timing belt is a big part of it, but i'm pretty sure that theres much more. and good luck with the whole thing.

 

HTat is totally not true... I have seen SO MANY 1G 3000 VR4s with spun bearings its not even funny. DSMs have crankwalk Im not saying these cars are junk that is just a pretty well known issue with teh 1G. Not a huge deal if you keep up on oil really good
