Cam timing/timing belt change on VR4 engine

Are there dots or lines or something to line up the cam in the correct position relative to TDC on the number one cylinder? Another question I have is what needs to come off to get the belt down around the crankshaft pully, its pretty far down there and its a tight squeeze. Lastly, if your timing belt goes does it cause damage to the internals of the engine? I know the compressions not that high, so maybe the valves and pistons would have no chance of touching no matter what. Thanks.

Yes, there should be dots on the cam gears and notches on the cam covers.

These are interference engines. If you slipped/broke a belt, there is a high probability of valve/piston damage.
