I have the same problem on my 1992 Pajero. i only know i need fuel when my orange light comes on. when i fill the tank, the needle goes right up like normal, but as it gets empty, the needle does not fall past half tank.

The fuel sending unit/sensor that tells your fuel gauge what to display could be shot to ****, This is usually in the tank with the fuel pump.
