Default I want a VR-4, but everyone deems it high maintenace

[size=2]I've been wanting a VR-4 since i knew an EVO was like twice as much. Love the sexy exterior, like the fully loaded interior (though a bit dated) and the numbers it gets, i mean 5.0s 0-60! amazing. But everyone i've talked to has told me the same thing: DON'T GET A TURBO CAR WITH MORE THAN 80,000 miles. They dont tell me exactly why not to get it, they just say the turbo's are probably dead (what the hell?) and that repairs will be a pain in the ***. So my question is, what exactly happens to old turbos that most likely would have had a tough life (honestly how many VR-4 owners don't push their engines) and is it really that expensive to maintain and/or replace the turbos? thanks

lol...the repair on a turbo isn't fun but its not a pain in the *** but if u don't want the headache take it to a good speed shop the will rebuild a turbo for around 350$ but it really matters on if u wanna up grade i mean if ur stock turbo goes bad and u have the right mods to handel a biger turbo i would put the 350$ twords a better turbo

They are just more costly to maintain, there are more things to break. They are not a walk in the park to work on, but if you are willing to deal with some head aches, just think.....in 10 years how much will a eclipse be worth compared to a 3S.......If you look at it like that....its definitely worth it.

As for miles on a car, most of the time you cant tell how those mile where, good or bad. Just make sure you ask the right questions and don't rush into it. Like SmokeShow said replacing a turbo it no big deal, just make sure its a 94+ and you should be good, plus if the turbos do go bad, you know what that means, its time to upgrade.

All that sounds so comforting, but wait I still got a couple questions.
-What happens to the turbo's when they go bad? do they completely stop working or does their output diminish?
-What was that about rebuilding it for $350? Is that like the total price, or do i still need to pay extra for parts and/or labor?
