Mitsubishi 3000GT During it's production run, and after, the 3000GT was a pure sports car offering forced induction and all wheel drive, as well as smooth aerodynamic styling.

Just looking for some general information.

Default Just looking for some general information.

Good evening,

I currently drive i jeep i have suited for offroading. I dont normally offroad anymore, so im really sacrificing ride quality onroad to have a jeep that never gets used for what it should.

Ive always liked 3000gts, but never considered buying one. ive come to conclusions if i find a buyer for my jeep, im going to pursue a 3000gt. so i figured i should learn some basics first.

what are the ideal years/models? and what are some normall faults to look for. Im looking to spend under 10, hopefully in the 7 grand range. My interest would be the sporty model, not quite sure which that one is.

are the only 3000gts with the twin turbo motor the vr4 with awd? if so that would probably be the model i would pursue. is the 4wd uncomfortable at all on tight turns on dry roads?

and just out of curiousity, what are some numbers stock 3000gts run in 1/4 miles.

thanks for your help,

Derek

There are basically two generations. 1991-1993, and 1994-1999, though the 1999 looks considerably different than the previous years. The best model of all the years is of course the VR-4 as mentioned above. It is all wheel drive, all wheel steering, totally climate controlled, terrific interior, and a powerful twin turbo engine that in 91-93 put out 300 HP stock, and the 94-99 models putting out 320 HP. VR4s with low mileage can be rather expensive, finding one under $10,000 with be difficult but definitely not impossible if you know where to look.

The next level down, if you can't afford the VR4 is the 3000GT SL (which is what I have). Every year except for the 1999 SL it put out 222 HP stock with front wheel drive. In 1999 however it was brought down to 218. Not a huge difference, but still. 4 HP is 4 HP. The difference between the SL and the base model is I believe the SL has leather seating and comes standard with several more options including a 400 watt premium sound system. I paid $6,500 for my 1996 SL in excellent condition and 94,000 miles on it. You should easily be able to find a good one in your price range, as long as you don't mind it's front wheel drive.

The last and certainly the least model is the base 3000GT. Although no real difference between this and the SL from 1991-1998, there were some minor differences that you might want to consider. Fewer options, and not the kick-*** sound system. If that doesn't matter to you, the lack of these things will definitely bring the price down somewhat, though how much could be debated. The 1999 base model however you should stay away from at all costs. A STOCK Civic could literally out-race you. The 1999 stock 3000GT offered a 161 HP SOHC engine. Revolting. Mitsubishi claimed that they made such a model as to make it more affordable to the public.

Then the entire 3000GT family went out of production, after a brand-new body. Hm. I wonder why.

Overall the 3000GT SL is a wonderful car for the money, though maintence and working on it can be difficult. For example, simply changing the sparkplugs can take quite some time for the simple reason taht you have to remove the upper intake plenum to reach the back 3 sparkplugs. But even though it is not the powerful twin turbo VR4, the SL does offer quite a quick. You must hold one while heavily accelerating as you can certainly feel a kick to it. I have never driven a VR4 but one day I will. What I do know is that it has an immense amount of power as you know. It is 0-60 in less than five seconds, stock.

That said, if you are into moddifying cars, stay away from the 3000GT. It is expensive as hell to mod, and very difficult to work on.

But, if you are the true enthusiast and know what you want, that won't matter and you'll find a way to make any 3000GT distinctly your own.
