The 1998 VR4 version of the 3000GT is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0 litre V6. This engine gives the 3000GT 320hp and 315 ft lbs of torque. So that would be my best bet if you looking for performance.

ALL the 2nd generation VR4's (94-98) look the same, except for the spoiler and for certain wheel combo's. The big "whale tail" wing came ONLY on the 3rd gen car's. (1999) Starting in 97, the VR4 production and sales became significantly less than the prior years. It's 97 through 99 VR4's that are the rarest, with only 287 99's EVER having been sold in the US. They STILL sell for around $30,000- $35,000 with decent milage, and it was a $50,000 car to buy new! ALL year VR4's came with the DOHC, 3.0 liter, twin turbo charged, engine, and real time all wheel drive. There WERE some differences between the generations though. 1st gen cars (91-93) came with a 5 speed manual tranny, and 2nd gen cars (94-98) came with a 6 speed manual tranny.

1st and early 2nd gen cars, came with "active aero" which consists of a speed sensing brain, that allowed the rear wing and the front spolier to be "active" and operate to produce downforce on the car, at speed in excess of 50MPH. (like some Porches) 1st and early 2nd gen cars also came equipped with 4 wheel steering, and an "active" suspsension and exaust. (a swith inside the car allowed you to swith settings from touring to sport modes, for both the susp and the exaust.) VERY technologically advanced cars for their time, no other way to state it really! 2nd and 3rd gen cars were rated at 20 more HP, due to nothing more than a wastegate solenoid restrictor plug, that was removed, giving them a rated 320 HP as opposed to the 1st gens 300 HP. (by virture of being able to run a few more pounds of stock boost) Suffice to say, us 1st gen owners have removed that restrictor plug, long ago..LOL

There are NUMEROUS listed articles and track tests that are conflicting, but the 3,800 lb car was a beast, regardless. Some magazines tested the STOCK car to run the 1/4 mile in the low 13's, and pull a 0-60 MPH in anywhere from 4.7 to 5.0 seconds flat. Top speed on the bone stock VR4 was rated at 159 MPH. The VR4 has rated in some magazines and past publications, as a top 10 finalist for "quickest car of the 90's," andas a top 15 finalist for " fastest STOCK 1/4 mile cars"of the 90's era. (non exotic cars)There are currently modified VR4's running in the low to mid 10's, albeit still a rarity, due to the AWD drivetrain being a weak point, under heavy HP.The AWD launch & torque on these cars (over 300 ft lbs stock) is a sight to behold, and is a main reason why we are JUST now learning how to get past busted transfer cases, after modding up in the 500-700 AWHP range.

Still a pretty rare and unique platform of vehicle, to say the least. TOTAL VR4 production for US sale, and subsequently the TOTAL number of VR4's EVER sold in the US for the ENTIRE production run of 1991-1999 = 15,537 unit's. Sure there are RARER car's, (TT MKIV Supra comes to mind) but when you consider that GM produced and sold what many still consider a "collector's piece" in their 1986-87 Buick Grand national, the numbers are less than half. GM produced and sold almost 30,000 GN's in 1986-87, and ya STILL don't see too manyof those on the streets anymore. I love my car to death and it is my ongoing project car. The only way to really know how fun and special these cars are, is to drive one for yourself.

They are nice and rare little cars, the VR4 Galant. One bigT-88 turbo, a good FMIC, and a few other mods, and i'm sure it hauls ***! I'm looking in to getting an 87 or 88 Conquest TSI or Starion, myself. I'm thinking it would be ALOT cheaper to get that car in to the low 11's than my VR4, and I can find TONS of parts for em too. Good luck with your Galant!
