Check the clutch for any oil or fluid on it. If you have been slipping the clutch a lot, you may have varnished it, meaning that it has a hard case burn on the outer surface. To check, find out where your clutch engages. If it is low to the floor, then that is the case. If it is high off the floor, yor clutch is worn. do yourself a favor and replace the entire assembly. That would include the clutch disk, Throw-out bearing, and the pressure plate. This will ensure that you do not have to go back into this again in the near future.

i bought mine like that. it is definately clutch slip. you were probably either high reving too much. ie: you said the rpms go to 6000. or you were riding the clutch all the time at stop lights. when i got my clutch replaced it cost me about 1800 with parts and labor. i only paid 1300 bc i knoew the mechanic. this is not a minor repair though. your going to have to change your driving habits before you ruin a 98'. that's just my .02. haha
