Since it comes and goes, it's probably lifter tick. There really is no "fix" other than replacing all the lifters with what is called 3rd gen lifters. Even then, people have still reported the occasional ticking. It won't harm your engine, it just sounds bad. How long has it been since you changed your oil? Do you use a high quality oil?

well.... i just got the car 3 weeks ago and im doing an oil change at the end of this week. i need money. but as far as i know the previous owner whos a good guy used decent quality oil. i read about the lifters a while back and does that mean that i need a larger delivery bore? or will that effect anything.

Generally, lifter noise is only present after the vehicle has been sitting for a while. After being noisy, it will eventually go away. Once it goes away, it shouldn't come back until the engine is shut down and allowed to sit for a while. If the noise was NOT there prior to your high speed run- lifters can generally be ruled out.

I have noticed with my '93 3000GT SL, the ticking tends to get worse in two cases... When she needs an oil change (or is running low on oil) as mentioned above and when the weather is getting colder. I have far more ticking during the winter than summer.
Just my two cents, hope it helps.

does it make a difference that the tick increases frequency as i raise the rpms?

Have you checked the oil?
If the oil is full, start the car, slowly (very slowly) raise the RPM's to 3000, hold there for a few seconds, then slowly back it down to idle. That will normally re-prime the lifters.
