Default vr4 auto tranny

hey guys, i really need this question answered. iff i drop a vr4 engine into my 3000gt, will my auto tranny be able to huck up to it no problem and will it hold the power from the turbocharged engine. the gearing and everything. i want to keep the fwd and auto tranny cuz a 5-speed awd tranny will be to much work. if anyone knows a definite answer or someone who can answer it for me, please let me know. thanks

Yes, it will withstand the power (for awhile).. You should get an LSD, or there is a good chance you'll puke your transaxle.

lol. how long is "for a while". and what is an LSD? if my tranny's gonna go in 5k miles or less then it's not worth it to me.

it will absolutly fail under 320 hp.
you want a VR4, do yourself a favor and sell your car to buy one. You'll be money ahead.

well this is the 1st time i'm hearing that the auto tranny will fail. everyone else keeps telling me it will do fine. who will actually know the right answer. i dont know if i can really compare the 2, but the eclipse gsx gave with an automatic turbo around the same time. and i'm pretty sure the mitsubishi gto in japan offered an awd auto tranny VR4at some point.

There is a member here, jomojr I think is his name. He did the conversion and has ran for many miles and numberous track visits. I don't know what upgrades he did to the tranny. A good place to start would be IPT performance transmissions catalog and a quaife LSD.

If you leave your tranny stock, it WILL break unless you never punch it...but who could do that.

Edit: All 3000gt (GTO's) were AWD in Japan, and I think Europe. They never offered an ATX with turbo's though. 3SX's shop car (the T4) has an AWD autobox with upgraded internals. It has made several 9 second runs and has not shelled itself. If memory serves me correctly, IPT beefed it up to handle 800hp.

if the trans was reliably capable of holding 320 hp, it would have been offered with it as an option. Hell, at the time of its release, mitsu didnt have a manual tranny they thought would be reliable behind that power, which is why they went to Getrag for the trans.
could it handle it for a bit? Sure. But when I say "reliably", I mean its trouble free and worry free, neither of which will happen without a ton of money.
why would anyone do that anyway? the amount of time/money/labor to do the converison so you could have a front drive tire smoking machine just doesnt seem worth it, especially since you can get a vr4 pretty reasonably.
