Default my tranny- works but doesnt work

so im on the way back from san antone and all of the sudden downshift and 3200 on the rpm. eventually it wont shift into 2 or 3 and i end up having it towed. guy at the shop said a complete rebuild, but i think he was trying to rip me b/c i was stranded out of town. he said it wouldnt scan and it was slipping in 3 and 4. i get a uhaul and bring it home.

while searching the site, im led to believe it may not be a complete rebuild as others have had similar problems with a different fix. in austin it was trying to shift into 2 but it would rev up and jerk as if i hit something, i think it was b/c it was hot. at home [dallas] i can get up to 35 or so but it wont change to the next gear. also it seems to be starting off in maybe 2 and staying there.

are there any parts i should consider before getting ripped?

247 and change
changed fluid and screen maybe a year and a half ago [ i think it was doing the same thing but honestly i dont remember]

thanks for any and all help folks..

I'd take it to a local shop/dealer who specializes in transmissions. Most likely it is going to require it to be removed and rebuilt. There is no way to exactly diagnose a transmission problem without tearing it apart as it is a complex mechanism where many parts interact. Your other option is to comparison shop online for a rebuilt or used transmission. Buying something used though is a risky proposition at best when it comes to a transmission. My other suggestion is to use it as an excuse to your wife (if married) to trade up to a newer and more fun car. In this economy their are a ton of great used cars out there at cheap prices.

IF I read correctly, you have 247k miles on it; Probably does need a rebuild. REbuilds are costly on FWD transaxles; I would look into a lower mileage used transmission; many come with a guarantee from salvage yards.

Thank You 2 for the quick replies!

i wish there were a better way. i drove it again today and its the same thing, starting in 2nd and changes no more. it isnt jerking anymore, hasnt done that since austin. good thing is, i live 7 mins away from work and the speed limit is 35 all the way so i should get a little while out of it. i just changed anti-freeze, renewed registration, recharged the ac and its sitting out there with a full tank of gas. i may change the filter/fluid again to see if i get lucky, that engine is in good shape. i'll let you guys know what happens if i change it.

any support groups out there for people who just cant let go?

enough ranting..

thanks again!

It's not easy these days .. we've all put up with an auto that wasn't perfect these days. Just yesterday my "Service Engine Soon" light came on .. code is oxygen sensor imbalance. I'm waiting for my JCWhitney computer reader to be delivered so I can reset/ignore the warning and get the light turned off. Thousands of dollars in custom mods so far and now this .. pfffft. Gotta love these mit's though

Default well??

so after a little while drove it again and its back the same.

is this good from the standpoint of the whole thing not needing to be rebuilt? think i may have to do the fliud/filter thing afterall and pray for a good turnout. this time i may use the lucas transmission product instead. im thinking it has a lot of metal and may be clogging the filter and just needing to be cleaned out. what you think about it dad? i figure if it was shot it wouldnt have worked for that little while.
