Default Need to replace the radio

My wife drives a 04 Limited, with the Infinity 6-disc in-dash changer. It crapped out today and reports error code 1 on any disc we insert. It's also making a lot of noise while trying to read the disc. She has over 100k on it, so there's no chance of a warranty repair (unless you know something I don't, which would be great!)

Anyway, I've seen several posts about the dealership charging $1,000+ to fix it, and looking around online you can pick up a used one for about $200.

So I got two questions:

1) What is this code thing the dealership would have to do to get it to work? Does it have to be done by the dealership? How much do you think they would charge?

2) Is it possible for me to "upgrade" to the 07 infinity radio, which supports MP3 playback? My wife wants to be able to listen to MP3s, but we don't have an ipod so she's stuck with a crappy modulator which kills her FM reception. Installing an 07 radio would be great if it would work.

Thanks!

HI there,

I know for a fact that this cannot happen. I used to have a 2005 Endeavor. I asked once about the radio change out and was told that the radio for the 2004 and the 2005 were identical, but then in the 2006 Endeavor, they made a change to the plugs in the back of the radio, and they do not support those of the earlier models. What we ended up doing was taking the bezel off, sending it out and they cut out where the radio piece is, and then framed it for a double din after market radio.. it was PERFECT.. I HIGHLY recommend you do that.. Look for Custom Radio on Youtube and see how they do it. It's amazing.
