Evo or Sti
Hey guys what's going on. I'm having a debate on if I should get an Evo 8 or an Sti. I'm guessing all of you guys are going to say the evo, and please give me a good reason to get one since it was a dream car for me a long time ago, and it's going to be my first car. I believe the sti is a better overall car, just that the extra 2k isn't worth it to me. What do you think?
Despite being a DSMer for my whole driving career and believing in the power potential of the 4g63, I'm not too much of a fan of the Evo. The reason is there are too many electronics involved in the drivetrain. From AYC to all the traction control and ACD, i wouldn't feel comfortable driving one to the limit. Do i trust in the powertrain? yes. Do i trust in the car itself? not really....i don't like very many electronics interefering with anything after the transmission. Suppose the ACD goes out while you're taking a sharp corner at 60mph....you're gonna be in a lot of trouble. The STI is much simpler. Two viscous diffs(I don't think they changed it for the STI), and that it. Less stuff can go wrong in an STI, and remember, you're driving a performance car. Whether you just want to see how fast you can take a corner to downright mechanical hatred, you're going to stress the car out. Mitsu cars are good....their electronics leave something to be desired. Plus the evo is a 2.0 inline to the scooby's 2.5 boxer. More displacment can ultimately lead to more power. I think the STI is more of a hot-rod, drag race winner...since you won't be going to track everyday, but you will encouter red lights and mustangs
....i would say go for the scooby.
I couldn't help but notice you said it was going to be your first car.....either you have rich parents who don't care about you or you're like 30 years old and have ridden the bus your whole life. Naw, just kidding....but realize it's more "un-likely" that you'll get either of those cars. I mean, you're parents do care about you right? They're not going to let their child(i don't think you're in the 30 years old scenario
) drive off in a 300hp car. Especially if you don't have the experience. And believe me, if you're just a kid in high school, there's not very many ways for you to come up with $900 a month. Of course an Evo cost like $28k, but since you're parents wouldn't want you killing yourself early, they won't want to help you finance the car. And many banks won't even bother checking the credit of an 18 year old(hypothetically, if you were 18, chances are you are younger but i don't know), so you won't get a respectable rate. Now the price is close to $600 a month.....where's the other $300 from you might ask? How about insurance? Remember, despite having a clean record(since you've never even owned a car), you're a teenage driver....in an expensive new car. The insurance companies know what an Evo is, and they know how teenagers drive....if you were an insurance company wouldn't you charge a lot for a high risk driver? But anyways, i'm floating away from you're original question....and who knows, maybe you are 30 years old
!

I'm going to be 16 this sunday, 9/26/88. My friend got an 05 rs, but is going to sell it for an sti. Plust im not going to be pushing it that much, eventually I'll race on the highway, as I do when im riding with my friends. Oh and I have rich *** parents who know how fast the cars are, and they trust me Way too much. Thanks for the reply though.

Trust you way too much, or don't care about you all that much? Now I, along with any other parent's on this forum(or anywhere else for that matter), wouldn't even consider giving my child a turbocharged awd car that can take on porches. If you were my kid, the real choice would be "Subaru Justy or Mitsubishi Mirage". And although i speak as if i'm a married old man, i'm only 21. I don't have kids, but i know the proper way to take care of them. My parents aren't rich, but we are well off. My first car was a 1997 Eagle Talon base model, a very decent car back when i was your age. My parents knew enough to not give me a turbocharged monster to learn to drive with. And as a result of getting a sporty car and not having enough experience, i crashed it on several occasions....from other cars to walls to lakes...whatever. You may think "you're a bad driver", but i was no worse than you. Besides, you will NEVER be a good driver if you learn to drive in a evo. Ask any professional racer or car enthusiast, if you don't learn the basics in a POS, you won't learn them in an evo or sti. If i were you, i would consider maybe a mk3 supra or fwd turbo 1st gen dsm to learn with. Besides, i know you're a kid, but what really matters to you, Personal skill or a car that do everything for you? Let's say people think you're a great driver because your evo keeps you stuck on corners, then you take a Sentra SE-R out on a track and totally suck....like you run in ditchs and oversteer through-out all the corners....What would you be like then? The SE-R is a great car, Peter Cunningham drives one in SCCA....It was the pace car in many track events....and is *the* current import hot rod. But you can't handle it well because you never picked up any skills driving an Evo. I know "image" is a major factor in you getting the car of your choice, and so is performance. But if all you care about is having a cool car that looks good, then why not just get a Porche Boxster? What it comes down to is you won't learn any skills in an evo. You might hear this a lot later on but maybe you'll hear it for the first time now: A decent driver makes a good car look good, A good driver makes a decent car look better. Just, if you care anything at all about performance or skill, Try and get a cheapo underpowered(by STI terms) car to train on. These are just my opinions, but there will be many other people you encounter that will tell you the same thing.....just in a meaner way sometimes.
haha you sound like a bunch of people at my school, immature and thinks he is really cool because his parents are about to buy him a nice car, i mean seriously with a name like driftracer how more rice could you get, b.t.w. good luck drifting your evo,the rwd on these evos are sick, so easy to drift (sarcasm), haha, go buy a 240 or somthing

I know that I may not have much weight to talk considering I have an 03 OZ Ralley but I have a friend that just bought a 05 STI and he is enjoying it very much. The car was his dream car and it is his first car that he got on his own as well. He and I are in the military so it's not that we are young. He loves his STI and I have seen it in action but I agree with SpyderGS he has a valid point with the driver argument. He is looking out for you in both the safety and in the skill department. The only thing you have to ask your self when you go out to bye your car is do you want to learn to drive right and know inside you are truly good or do you just want to go out and win and say you’re the best and know your not really that good. If you don’t care about the truth then get the best car you can get. Like I said I have an OZ and I know that it isn’t the best car in the world so I know that I can drive. Now I am not saying that I am the best because I am far from it. I have lots to learn but I know that I can handle a POS as SpyderGS has put. I guess what I am trying to say is the choice will ultimately be up to you but just keep in mind this is going to be your first car there are many years ahead of you to get a different car. It isn’t like the world is going to end before you have the chance to get your dream car…
