Alternator Freezing; 2001 Galant ES, 4 cyl

2001 Galant, 4 cyl, approx 160k miles.

When the weather gets cold, like below 32, the car runs off of just the battery for about the first 10-15 minutes you run it.

The instrument gauges don't work, all the interior lights are dim, and the wipers and windows move very slowly while this is happening. Very occasionally the charging system doesn't kick in before the battery dies and I'm stuck on the road.

The current battery is brand new. This is the third battery this has happened with. The charging system checks fine in good conditions.

After changing the batteries this much, my next step is to replace the alternator. Being such a high mileage car, I would like to avoid this. Any tips for a different fix?

There is no engine light on.

start the car up in the AM like a good 20 mins before u have to leave. dont turn on the lights wipers etc.... and it shouldnt be as bad. but if this is the origional alternator anyways you are going to want to change it. u could have saved the money u have been spending on batteries when u buy the alternator.

If it gets that cold maybe a block heater would be a good idea.
