Crank Position Sensor problem
Galant 1998 1997cc 4g6 16v Automatic
Car cut out (as if ignition switched off). AA said "No spark". Tests on sensor outputs led him to say Cam sensor ok but Crank Position Sensor failed. Tow home. Looking to fix this myself with Haynes manual (arriving tomorrow). Am I over-ambitious here. Any advice/links appreciated. Regards, Bastun |
that model galant didnt have many problems with the crank sensors. but what usually happens is this, the timming belt breaks, and destroys the crank sensor and the crank blade in the process, and not to mention most of your valves are now bent. have to take off front covers to inspect the belt, or whats left of it. if the belt did break, your going to have to remove the head and send it to a machine shop to have them tell you how many valves are bent, and how much it is to get it fixed. and replace the crank sensor and blade. only other thing common to that model is the distributor going out, that was fairly common, and will give you a no spark condition. distrbutors run around 400.00 good luck,

Timing belt broken!?
I thank you for your post and regret the delay in reply. I will bear in mind your concerns and investigate. FYI: This model does not have a distributer. There are two switching transistors each firing a pair of plugs. These are controlled directly from the engine computer which, in turn, derives the timing from cam and crank sensors.

your original message specifies 1998 1997 galant. that model did have a distributor. if your galant doesnt have one, then it is a 1999 to present model. fyi: when you ask for help, specifying the year model and engine size is crucial.
