Mitsubishi Galant 2001: Evap system large leak detected

Hey guys, i just went to autozone to get a free diagnostic and it read:

Probable cause:

Faulty fuel cap

Leaking vent or purge solenoid

Evap Hose faulty.

Is it worth it to try to fix these on my own or should i get a mechanic to fix these for me. I have an emissions test coming in August and i really don't want to spend an arm and a leg fixing all this. If i could do this myself, how easy is it?

I'd start with a new gascap. Sometimes these systems are extre sensitive and only and OEM gascap will work.

Thanks.

I am not that familiar with the evap system on the Galant, but I encountered this problem on a Dodge truck I owned, and it turned out to be one of the hoses at the charcoal canister.

I believe the canister on the Galant is located on the rear driver's side, tucked up under the car. I'd crawl under and inspect the canister and hoses for damage, cracks, deterioration, loose hose clamps, etc. Sometimes old hoses have really fine cracks that you can't see by just looking. Squeeze each hose to flatten it and look closely. Sometimes dealers only sell these hoses in sets which can be pricey. You can take the bad hose to an auto parts store and likely match it up to something close and save a bunch of money.

Good luck!
