timing

Okay, I'm new here but i have been reading alot of the messages on here... i have a 96 galant 2.4l.. the silent shaft belt broke on me and i have replaced it.. im trying to get all the timing lined up.. i'm using a chilton book to do it but there seems to be something wrong in the book.. the book says that the top ( camshaft ) sprocket is to have the timing mark pointing to the left ( looking at the engine from the drivers side), i put it there and looked at the rotor and it was pointing at no.3 cylinder ( i have no.1 at TDC) so my question is.. where is the camshaft timing mark supposed to be pointing to have everything lined up correctly, i think the book is wrong and my local dealership would not tell me anything.

id appreciate any help on this matter.. id hate to put it back together wrong and end up bending valves or something worse.

RE: timing

I can't believe that no one on here knows anything about the timing.

I'd like to get it put together this weekend so any help or suggestions????

RE: timing

Your TDC mark is your number 1 piston. If this is the 4 cyl model the timing mark is a little indentation on the inside of the sproket look on the inside as apposed to the outside.

Yes, i know where the mark is on the sprocket, but when i line it up with the mark on the head.. the rotor is pointing at the no.3 piston .. and i know i have the no.1 at TDC (assuming my book is correct)
