Strange sound from new Lancer
I have brand new 2009 Lancer GTS and a few days after I got it I noticed a strange sound. It only happens when I first start the car and place it in drive. I can roll all I want and it wont happen until I touch the gas petal. The sound reminds me of a crunch sound as if I ran over a soda can. It will only happen once and will only repeat after I turn the car off. I have read some threads saying this could be the ABS self check but they all describe the sound as a clunk. The dealership has not been much help. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Check and make sure your air filter box is latched and sealed properly. My other suggestion is to have the dealer reflash the ecu.
(these were just the solutions I found searching for the similar problem on your model) |
.......beuller.
could very well be the "ABS setting/test" sound you hear. i have 08 gts, 07 outlander and 09 RA. all make "the sound". not really a CLUNK. your description of the sound is as good as any i have heard. since it only does it on a fresh start up it is logical it is ABS. |
its the ABS pump, as said.
if you read your owners manual, it says this. |

Thank you very much to the both of you. Thanks to to ManyBrews for pointing this out in the manual. This is my second Mitsubishi and my previous 03 Lancer OZ did not make the sound so as you could imagine I was pretty worried since it is a new car. The only things I cant figure out now is why sometimes it seems to come from a different side of the engine compartment, and why I didnt notice it until about three days after I got the car. Maybe it started later. Maybe I just wasnt paying attention. Who knows... :)
