Post 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Limited 3.8L V6 Parts, Issues, & More

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a used 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Limited and I would just like to share some info that might help others. This maay be good for 2003-2006 Models but please confirm and do your research before buying the parts. I am gonna be getting the timing belt/water pump serviced and after hours and days of research I found out the parts required. The following are the oem part numbers
along wih the price range that I've seen on the internet and quoted when calling the mitsubishi dealerships to get the timing belts/water pump for my '03 Montero Limited serviced:

Timing Belt: Part # MD358549 Price range $140- $190

Tensioner: Part# MD362861 Price range $30- $75

Water Pump: Part # MD979171 Price Range $140- $200

CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT: Part #1100A141 $13-$50

Tension Roller: Part # MD140071 Price range $40- $60

Pulley: Part # MD319022 Price range $39-$60

Fan Belt: Part # MN155725 Price Range $45-$75

As you can see the oem mitsubishi parts are crazy expensive. You can find aftermarket parts made by Gates, GMB, Koyo, Bando, NPW,AISIN etc .. for alot less however if you decide to use a mitusbishi dealership for the labor only they will not warranty/guarantee the work. I was quoted by several dealers in Colorado that it would cost $900-$1200 depending which dealer I called. The price included parts. Anyway i hope this was helpful to anyone in the same situation.

I also spent some time reading the owners manual regarding the types of fluids to use in the 03 Montero. I found a few places that sells the Mitsubishi Diamond Automatic Transmission fluid SP III (Part#: MZ320200) mentioned in the owners manual

Here they sell it for $8 Per Quart
STM: MITSUBISHI AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID | DIAMOND ATF SP III | ACH1ZC1X05

The Powersteering fluid was a bit tricky because i could not find any Mitsubishi brand name fluid to buy. From my research it appears you can use any aftermarket powersteering fluid. I personally will be buying the Redline Powersteering Fluid #30404

Red Line Synthetic Oil - Power Steering and Misc. - Power Steering Fluid

As for Motor oil, I am going with mobil 1 5w30 Extended Performance Fully Synthetic Oil

Synthetic Oil | Mobil 1™ Extended Performance

I am now looking at tires size (P265/70R16) for my Montero. I have narrowed it down to the following:

Michelin LTX M/S 2 - $195 Per Tire
Tire Details - Discount Tire

Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S G051 -$154 Per Tire
Tire Details - Discount Tire

Prodigy H/T (Made By Yokohama) - $119 Per Tire
Tire Details - Discount Tire

I narrowed it down to these three tire because I dont go off-roading, however I do live in a state in which there is lots of snowfall, so I will need to use the 4x4 capabilites that Montero has to offer. I based my list on quality, reliability and of course budget. You can go to the site and read the reviews on these tires. Please feel free to respond with suggestions on tires you think might be better than the ones I've chosen.

To replace Shocks/Struts using OEM parts is gonna cost a fortune. In this case maybe looking at KYB aftermarket shocks might be a good alternative.

Front Shocks
Part#MN125529
MN125529 SHOCK ABSORBERFR SUSP

Rear Shocks
Part# MR990539

I cant really find any sites that sell this. It seems the Mitsubishi dealship will need to special order this and will cost around $150+ for each
