I got my rear seals at RockAuto.com and all you have to do is use a 1/4" drive X 10 mm socket. Reach behind and take off the two bolts, Pull out the cover and change the O RING and put it back together and your done.

just got all my parts from Rock Auto! Spark plu wire and coils are significant cheaper. Spark plus were about $9 each.

I'll be doing this on my next day off.

Anyone have a diagram or photo of the 7 bolts i need to remove?

Default 03 Montero spark plug and valve cover gasket change

It sure was a pain! Take your time during this install for both removal and placing the new valve cover gasket. Its been over 3 months and so far so good there is no oil leaks!

I also ordered my spark plug wires from Rock Auto which the price is a steal!

Do you have to drain oil and coolant to do this?

Nope. No need to drain oil or coolant. There are cooling lines coming to the throttle body, but you do not need to disconnect them - just move it out of the way.

Thanks HunterD.

I wonder why the service manual says to drain the coolant. I guess its just for the little bit that is in the line to the throttle body... I pulled those and sealed them off with some stretch wrap and put them out of the way.

In attached pic you can see why the corner of the valve cover is leaking. It looks like a bit of the gasket is turned up. Based on what you see would you say I need a new cover as well though? I was manually going to try and bend the interior of the cover back into a straighter line...

It looks like perhaps during the last time valve cover gaskets were changed, they were pried out with a screwdriver. That had bent the channel where the gasket sits. I think you should be able to straighten them out. I'd give it a try first.
