1999 Montero Sport
I've been eyeing one at a local car lot for about a month. I've never owned a Mitsubishi before and was wondering if it's a good buy at $5800 with 85k miles. You don't see many cars, vans or suvs with that low of miles below a '08 in my town. the same car dealer as been trying to get me to look at a '04 rav4 with 164k miles for $9450. That all most twice the miles and $3+k more then the Montero. Anyway I need all the help I can get here. (lol)

What trim level, LS, XLS, Limited? Is it a 4X4 or 2WD? $5800 seems a bit steep to me for a '99 unless it's a 4X4 Limited.

4x4 LS, And in the town I live in this is cheap sadly. I got a call from the same car lot and they just got a 1998 4runner with 129k miles for 10k. I can buy a 1999 Benz AWD car from the same lot for 4500 w/ 113k.. But I'm in need of a suv that is tough as nails.

Well, I wouldn't pay nearly $6K for 12-year old LS. If you want a deal, it's best not to rely on the local selection if you are in a small town. Look elsewhere in some larger metro areas, shop around, and be prepared to travel. The last Montero Sport I bought I found in Idaho, and I live in Los Angeles. After a bunch of back and forth by e-mail and telephone with the dealer, I flew there, bought it, and drove it home. It was a 1,200 mile drive and it was still cheaper for me to do it that way then if I had settled on a local vehicle.
Look on cars.com, autotrader.com, craigslist.org, ebay.com, etc. Expand your search radius until you find what you want at the right price. |
You're post freaked me the hell out. I live in the Kc area in Missouri and just bought my first car this weekend. A 1999 Montero Sport. I saw you're name as well as your title post and thought "oh ****, a 1999 Montero sport was lost in Missouri... I just bought a stolen car...." But that's not the case at all. Thank god haha.
But I bought mine for 2500 used off craigslist. I watched it go from 6k down to 2.5k the last month and decided to call. The reason no none bought it was because it's a stick and no one wants to drive that... wrong. I love it. I spent all weekend detailing it to clean it up and I couldn't be happier. I'm new to the forum as well as the Monty owning but It drives like a beast and has the track record of living long and strong. I'd suggest buying the one at the dealers, just make sure to do a tune up once you buy it (ie fluid flushes, oil filter, fuel filter, etc...). I don't trust anyone when it comes to used cars, precautionary is better than broken. |
