1999 Montero Sport XLS Tranny Fluid Burn

Hello,

MyATF fluid burns,I just had it flushed in a dealership and it turned "brown"again after 2 weeks. I have about 119,000++ miles on it.My trannystill shifts smoothly and there's no slipping at all. I also have a leak on it and itflows to the exhaust pipe, emitting burning odor. I was also informed by Mitsubishi Motors that it has nothing to do with Recall ID # 99V041000 because it was taken care of when I had the appointment for the recall service in 1999.

I thinkmy tranny breather vent needs to bereplaced and my cooler lines too.

Please advise what needs to be done and how much will I spend.

Thanks a lot!

i drive a manual so i dont know about cooler lines.
all i can think is there is probably some exposed hole on your tranny which allow dirt to get in thus making the atf dirty.maybe the part where the shift stick comes out.
the leak u mention could come from a gasket or the oil seal.u can change them all if u like or just the leaking part.

If the trans fluid is burnt the clutches in your trans are done, which means your gonna need a rebuild or new trans.

So why is the tranny in need of rebuild at 119K miles? He said it still shifts fine, and it is not slipping. What causes a tranny to "burn" fluid?

Its probably slipping and he doesnt notice it, there isnt really anything else that is gonna fry the trans fluid in a couple weeks. I dont see the trans cooler going bad.

I know when transmission slips and I know how it feels when driving and riding in a vehicle with slipping transmission...It's very rare for a Montero to have an internal automatic transmissionbreakdown when it has119,000 miles on it. Besides, I don't use my truck for towing nor rough road adventures.

***Update***
My friend's mechanic told me I might have a clogged/dirty breather vent (which is commonfor Monteros). I was advised to get it replaced and re-flush and back-flushthe tranny to clear out the cooler linesfor any internalblockage. But my friend's mechanic cannot physically check my SUV, he's serving in the military.

That sounds like a definite possibility, and much cheaper at that...I personally have never heard of it, but I am happy to be hearingit now. Good Luck, and LET US KNOW!

I never heard of a clogged vent causing fluid to burn up, replace it and see what happens.

maybe the flush wasn't good and they left all that burnt fluid in the torq convertor and it just blended with the new fluid
