2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Timing Belt
 

:confused:I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport (160K miles) and I want to replace with a good OEM timing belt. I purchased both a Mitsuboshi and Beck Arnley (already returned) timing belt but it seem that Beck Arnley timing belt is better because it's not thin as Mitsuboshi timing belt. Mitsuboshi timing belt warranty only 12 months or 12,000 miles, which is doesn't seem to last long. I can't seem to find a warranty for Beck Arnley timing belt anywhere on the web. Any suggestion? Which belt should I go with? I want a belt should last at 60K miles.

Don't even think about anything but Mitsu factory parts for this project. Don't forget to do the water pump as well. My first belt was still perfect at 80K and my 2nd was still perfect at 185K.

Sorry Cougar - I just don't have time to answer that if you don't already know. (Didnt' you just take back an aftermarket belt that didn't match?)

The timing belt is only the $#%@ing most critical part on your truck and of the probably million plus Mitsu V-6 engines in the world I'd bet all but a handful have the factory belt and the engine has a great reputation. And the factory belts are not expensive. Get this one wrong and you will have a truck one day and a be parting out a big metal planter box the next.

And forget about warranties. Do you really care if they give you back your $80 when you have $3000 worth of valve and/or piston damage?

Ron, you must be mistaken me for someone else. I think I have struck a thin nerve with ya :)

Reason I asked is because I have spoken with at least 4 mechanics that said it would be ok to use after market belt. People that have been in business many years.

I have had mine replaced 14 month ago with an after market and no issue what so ever. Difference in price for the parts was very substantial BTW. And yes, water pump was changed as well.

Make sure you replace the harmonic balancer bolt too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had a shop that a friend recommended do ours, he didn't replace the bolt with a new one, and our balancer came loose from the front of the engine and broke the alignment pin that lines up the accessory pulley on the crankshaft pulley for the timing belt two times. The third time I bought a new timing belt pulley and a new bolt and made the mechanic put them on while I watched. Knock on wood, we haven't had any issues since. So just my .02 make sure you replace the balancer bolt!

I'm so tired of people saying you have to use only mitsu parts! I have an 02 montero sport xls and I use pretty much all aftermarket parts due to there is no mitsu dealer near me. I have a Dayco timing belt on mine. Never had an issue. I'm sure there is thousand's of monteros out there with aftermarket timing belts running just fine.
