2001 Montero Limited shifter issues please help

2001 Montero Limited Shifter IssuesHello everybody, Im new here and I need some advise, during last week the shifter knob on my Montero was very hard to move in between gears, then finally on friday after work, just go start the vehicle, move the shifter to reverse out of my parking spot when I move the shifter to drive it was not engaging, I move the shifter back into parking then again in drive and nothing. finally after coursing like 30 mins I force the shifter knob into drive and there it goes. I went home next day I try it again and since that is doing the same, very tight, from parking goes in reverse and thats it, now the truck don't want to start like is in other gear and not in parking, when I put reverse the reverse lights works as usual, don't know what to do anymore, I took apart all the center console to see whats going on there but everything seems to be normal. Help is greatly appreciated. thanks and have a great day.
My dad was the first owner, it always been on the family, now it has 160,000 miles on it, it runs very smooth and its always been well kept.

I would check the linkage under the vehicle. If you live in cold climate you may have build up snow and ice on/around the linkage that prevents you from shifting. It can be a dirt clod too or corrosion. Another thing to check is the brake safety switch and interlock button function. Make sure all that is working.

Ha ha, just read your other post - I'm pretty sure you got no ice build up on the shifter linkage :) Still check linkage under the vehicle to start.
