2001 montero sport harmonic balancer removal
 

Have the crankshaft bolt off but every removal tool tried doesn't work or doing something wrong. Have a removal kit rented from auto zone now and the problem is none of the bolts fit the 2 holes. I have two that fit but the darned things are too big to fit through the removal plate in the kit. Feel stupid....what am I getting wrong here??

Check that out. It helped me. I ended up buying a tool but you can make one. You only need it for reinstalling the crank bolt, to remove the crank bolt you can just use the starter to pop it off

I believe Lstansell is referring to removing the pulley itself ("...the crankshaft bolt is off...").
You should not need any puller to remove the pulley. The bolt holes in the harmonic balancer is for holding the crankshaft bolt removal tool, not for pressing out the pulley. You may have some minor corrosion holding the pulley to the shaft. Spray some penetrating oil on the shaft, let it soak and wiggle the pulley around. It may take couple of soaks but it should slide out easily (by hand). On re-assembly, make sure to apply some oil to the shaft to keep corrosion at bay.

Thanks for the replies. Tried penetrating spray several times to no avail. The harmonic balancer removal tool kit from AutoZone instructed using the bolt holes for removal. Took it back today and got the pin type but haven't tried it yet. I'll definitely post success or failure lol Thanks again!
